Let’s talk perfume and fragrance with Kayali
It’s no secret the fragrance community has seen a great boost in content geared towards fragrance and perfume. Over the last four years, phrases and hashtags, including Perfumetok have emerged, as has the creation of social media pages solely dedicated to perfume, such as BlackGirlsSmellGood. While we can discuss fragrance and perfume for hours, this article is dedicated to none other than Kayali! We recently had the opportunity to attend a Digital Sephora event titled, Layers of Love: Discover the Power of Fragrance and the World of KAYALI with Founder Mona Kattan. If you aren’t familiar with Kattan she is the woman behind Kayali, the sister brand to Huda Beauty and according to Sephora, the “perfume princess!”
Dressed in a fabulous pink pajama set Mona Kattan and Kayali’s global brand director Kara Davis appeared ecstatic to spend their night discussing fragrance and their brand Kayali. Live streaming from Dubai the duo began sharing details about their newest fragrance Eden Sparkling Lychee | 39. Kattan described the perfume as a fruity floral fragrance stating, “That’s what Eden’s all about. It’s about fruity florals. Sparkling Lychee is in a similar realm as Eden Juicy Apple. Very beautiful and youthful also but this one is a little bit more sophisticated. It’s a little bit more luxurious. Not saying, that Eden Juicy Apple isn’t, but this one has a little bit more complexity to it as well.”

Kattan also mentioned she had been working on both perfumes [Eden Juicy Apple 01 and Eden Sparkling Lychee 39] at the same time. She personally loved Eden Sparkling Lychee the most, but everyone else loved Eden Juicy Apple, and since “democracy rules” Eden Juicy Apple rolled out first and two years later her favorite has hit the shelves. Vanilla 28, one of Kayali’s classics, was also discussed by the two. I have to admit hearing I squealed! As a gourmand lover, I love vanilla fragrances and sweet-smelling perfumes.
I love this one. It’s Beautiful. It makes me feel very pretty and I don’t know… I get that a lot from people. The Eden juices, just make you feel so pretty. – Mona Kattan
Mona Kattan’s Fragrance Tips & Tricks
Layering Fragrance When it comes to layering fragrance Mona’s first rule is not to overthink it. She truly believes the best way to find your fragrance combination is to have fun and experiment. In her opinion, it’s all about trial and error. PLAY, PLAY, and have fun! “People say you should work with the stronger scents first, like the ones that are very base note heavy, like an oud fragrance.” Global brand director Kara Davis chimed in asking a question to help clarify the suggestion asking, ” For example, if you were to layer Yum Pistachio Gelato and Eden Sparkling Lychee together…” Mona answered, “You’d put the Yum down first because it’s a heavier scent and it’s a lot more base note heavy. But again please don’t overthink it. I feel too many people overthink it and then they won’t do it because of it. Have fun, play we have too many rules in our lives, so we don’t need rules with our fragrances.” Both Kara and her suggest layering perfume oils and body mists as a way to enhance fragrance.
Fragrance Preservation “Luckily with perfumes the shelf life is a lot longer than normal cosmetics because of the alcohol. Alcohol is a great preservative. The average shelf life for fragrance is four to five years and it can last even longer but it will start to evolve and not smell the same.” Mona also recommends keeping your fragrance in a dark room, with no sunlight and no heat, try to keep it cold! Kara added to the conversation stating, “No Bathrooms!”
Does Smelling Coffee Beans really work? In Mona Kattan’s opinion, this is a myth! She stated, “Coffee Beans are a lie, that makes it worse. Coffee is another strong scent so it makes you exercise the muscle more.” She expressed how she believes it is possible to go nose blind but what helps her reset her nose is smelling fresh skin and also taking a break. “Leave a part of your skin perfume-free. Smelling fresh skin helps while going perfume shopping.”
What’s In Store for Kayali 2024
Although the pair was unable to reveal all the details for the upcoming year, they made it clear to attendees that The Wedding Collection will be restocked! Additionally, they dropped a hint stating, “2024 is juicer than 2023 and it’s going to be a very vanilla year!” To me, it seems like perfume lovers are getting a delicious-smelling treat this year and I can not wait to indulge. Bring on the Vanilla!
